Moonshot Academy

 What is Moonshot Academy?

The Moonshot Moment Academy program is an on-campus, after-school program held at four pilot schools that extends the school day for Kindergarten through second grade students.  The Academies will feature a strong academic component targeted at each student’s identified area of reading weakness, combined with enrichment activities that have proven to bolster learning when paired with academic intervention.  All of these activities are aimed at improving the literacy skills of children identified as reading below grade level.

 

What are the Objectives of Moonshot Academy?

 

The five main objectives of Moonshot Academy are to:

 

1-     Accelerate learning of all Kindergarten through second grade students to catch them up to grade level reading by third grade through extending the school day.

2-     Provide on-campus access for wide-spread teacher professional development of literacy skill instruction.

3-     Use these 4 pilot Moonshot Academies to create a best practice model that can be expanded to all 13 elementary schools.

4-     Target 25% penetration of the Kindergarten, first and second grade school population, comprised of lower-performing children to attend the program.

5-     Based on the Vail Valley Foundation model, find enrichment opportunities that are so engaging that they drive increased student attendance and achievement.

Who Can Attend?

Moonshot Academy primarily serves students who are reading below grade level in Kindergarten through second grade.  This is important because if children don’t read on grade level by third grade, only 1 in 7 will ever catch up.  The only way to catch these children up is to provide them with extended time outside the school day.

 

Why Moonshot Academy?

With an average of 44% of children reading below grade level all across our county, there are approximately 1600 children that we need to reach with this program.  Therefore, the most effective method to reach these kids is to create Moonshot Academies on school campuses that will have the potential to benefit all children who are behind.
